This test is used to determine the flash point of petroleum products in the 40oC to 360oC range by Pensky Martens closed cup equipment.
Fuel contamination of lubricating oils is a potentially serious problem. This test measures a closed cup flash point, which is the usual flash point quoted for engine oils. A lowering of the flash point in piston engines may be a sign of injection pump wear, blocked injectors, inefficient combustion or cracked or broken fuel return lines whereby unburnt fuel is deposited on the cylinder walls and mixes with the lubricating oil. Even small dilution radically reduces viscosity.
