Initial pH
The oil is diluted in ASTM D 664 solvent and the pH of the solution is measured.
Oil does not have a natural pH but its acids and alkalis can produce an initial pH reading using the water present in the solvent. The lower the level the more acidic it is. Manufacturers give limits to determine oil change using this measurement.
