Lovibond Colour

This consists of the visual determination of colour in a variety of petroleum compounds such as lubricating oils, heating oils, diesel fuel oils etc. Results are reported as the colour of the sample and the designation of the glass producing a matching colour. ie 7.5 colour to ASTM 1500.

Fluid manufacturers often state a colour for their products, any change from this in use can be an indication of a potential problem. Darkening could be due to overheating, a lighter colour might be due to a different product being present. Colour can also be influenced by the type of base oil used in a lubricants blending process.
