OIL ANALYSIS TESTS

TGA Thermo Gravimetric Analysis

This test is used to determine the change in mass of a new or used petroleum product as it is heated under controlled conditions.

This is a measure of the Soot level in the oil. A weighed sample is heated in Nitrogen on a micro balance to remove the oil leaving the soot, additives and contaminants, this is then burnt in an oxygen atmosphere, whereby the the carbon is turned into carbon dioxide which boils off. Each of these changes in weight is recorded, the drop in weight from removal of carbon is a measure of soot level.
