Aviation Analysis Program

Oil Filter Analysis

This in-house method covers the analysis of wear contaminants found in filters from oil wetted surfaces in the oil lubrication systems of engines.  The residue obtained from flushing the oil filter is normally analysed using the SEM (Scanning Electron Microscope).  The debris is placed in the SEM and the elemental components are determined by Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy.  Where the OEM has developed and shared metal compositions they will be included in the reports as best match.  This is a non-destructive method which allows further analysis if necessary.  The residue from Honeywell filters will be obtained and analysed according to their protocol.  This method can also be used to analyse the debris found in other filter types.
